Introduction to Forest Engineering

Forest Engineering is included in Forestry module since Prae Forestry School established in 1936. At that time, Forest Engineering primarily emphasized on logging as a major subject in order to urge degree of forest utilization. Therefore, Forest Engineering is initially considered as the origin of Forestry education in Thailand.

 

Thus, logging requires an integration of multiple disciplines into teaching process, such as, knowledge of forest machinery, surveying and mapping, forest road network, infrastructure construction, information technology, and Geographic Information System. Above mentioned knowledge facilitate an optimal timber harvesting systems that disturb the environment as little as possible.

 

Forest Engineering can divide into five disciplines:

1) Forest surveying and mapping by applying both basic instrument and Global Positioning System (GPS),

2) Forest operations includes logging plan, logging assessment, Reduced Impact Logging,

3) Forest machinery and conceptual design for forest machines,

4) Applied computer sciences in Forestry, database management, and application programs in Forestry,

5) Bioengineering, plant based structural engineering.

 

Bachelor's degree holders from Forest Engineering department are outstanding in digital mapping, forest operations, information technology in Forestry and Geographic Information System (GIS) in Forestry. They do not have only chance to work with Government organizations, but also be able to work with state enterprises, public agencies, independent entities, and private sectors related to wood industry, for instance, Forest Industry Organization (FIO), Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA), Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). Furthermore, there are chances for Bachelor's degree holders to continue with Master and Doctoral degrees as well.
